Blaming IRS Victims

Yesterday's IRS hearings in Congress were some of the most riveting I've seen. Hearing from those who were the victims of IRS targeting was heartbreaking and frustrating.

One of the more moving testimonies came from Alabama Tea Party leader Becky Gerritson. You can see her entire statement here, but it reads in part: “I’m not here as a serf or a vassal. I’m not begging my lords for mercy. I’m a born free American woman. Wife, mother, and citizen. And I’m telling my government that you’ve forgotten your place.”

But something amazing happened during that hearing. Democrat Rep. Jim McDermott flipped the argument and actually suggested that it was the fault of the IRS victims for being targeted. Seriously! He told these people who were invasively targeted by our government because of their conservative beliefs: “None of your organizations were kept from organizing or silenced. We are taking about whether or not the American taxpayers will subsidize your work. We are taking about a tax break. If you didn't come in and ask for this tax break, you would have never had a question asked to you, you can go out there and say anything you want in the world.” {VIDEO}

Luckily Paul Ryan stepped up to immediately rebut McDermott's assertions that these law-abiding people brought this on themselves. His response generated cheers and applause from those in the hearing, and I've watched a lot of hearings in my day and that rarely happens.

What's even more amazing is that McDermott is apparently not alone in his strategy to blame the IRS targeting victims. Now the media is also in on the effort to make it seem as though these patriots had it coming to them. The Politico this morning ran a piece, “Red flags and gray areas in IRS scandal.” Lawrence O'Donnell tweeted (and then deleted) that Issa didn't put the Tea Party witnesses under oath because he knew that they were going to lie about “tyranny.” Another line being used by Axelrod and others is that there was an influx of requests around this time (2010), which left the IRS flat-footed on how to handle (a fact which has been disproven). In other words, what we are seeing are Democrats and the media in a coordinated effort to point the finger back at these IRS targeting victims, somehow saying that they are to blame and that they brought this on themselves. Just unbelievable.

Why the attempt to spin it away from the IRS and from Washington? Well that's an easy one: “A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released late Tuesday shows 55 percent believe the IRS targeting of conservative groups raised questions about the administration’s 'overall honesty and integrity.'” Even NBC News reported this morning about the “ominous” signs among Obama's approval ratings due to these scandals, including just a 29% approval rating among independents. These scandals are making impact with the American public and damaging the credibility of the White House, and the IRS scandal is perhaps the scandal with the furthest reach. So now the liberals are in panic mode, trying to do anything and everything they can to deflect. Ultimately I think that will make them look worse in the eyes of the American public.
