Gingrich Suspends His Campaign

Just moments ago, in Arlington, VA Newt Gingrich officially announced a “suspension” for his 2012 Presidential Campaign. Gingrich began and shortly into his speech had to pause as he was overcome by a moment of emotion as he thanked his daughters for being the best debate coaches. He also thanked Calista’s mother for following every step of the campaign and enduring just as much as they had. He also showed appreciation for his 179,000 donors and singled out his brother Randy who traveled all over the country campaigning for him.

Amongst his heavy-hitters was Governor Rick Perry who stood by Gingrich the whole way through and told him “I’m with you ‘til the cows come home.” Herman Cain, Todd Palin and Michael Reagan also were addressed as having been incredibly beneficial supporters.

Gingrich then went on to the voters. He thanked the voters of south Carolina and apologized for breaking their tradition of always having picked the nominee. He admits he will feel “slightly guilty every time I go through South Carolina.” Said primary night of South Carolina is a night he and his family will never forget; it was a tremendous experience.

But what is next? “Today I am suspending the campaign, but suspending the campaign does not mean suspending citizenship. Calista and I are active citizens. I have been an active citizen since high school. This August will be 54 yrs.” As a citizen he will continue what he fought for as a candidate, particularly three main things: 1) What America needs to do to be safe and prosperous, 2) how to explain that message to the American people so they give you permission, and 3) how to implement those ideals if the American people give you the permission.

On a lighter note he joked that “perhaps the moon colony was probably not my most clever comment” but that at least he assisted in “providing material for Saturday Night Live.”

He then addressed the question, “Is mitt Romney conservative enough?” His answer was not yes or no, but said “this is not a choice between Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Romney and the most radical leftist president in American history.” That Americans need to ask ourselves “who would Romney appoint and who do we already know Obama appoints?...the gap is wider than any point in history. A Republican sweep would revitalize America just as the Reagan sweep revitalized America. We’ve done it before and we can do it again.” Gingrich said that revitalization would begin on the night of the election once Americans find out that Obama is voted out of office. That people will begin hiring again, and the market will regain confidence.
