Obama's Goal: 2014

It seems as though Barack Obama's political agenda has been exposed. The Washington Post reported, "The goal is to flip the Republican-held House back to Democratic control, allowing Obama to push forward with a progressive agenda on gun control, immigration, climate change and the economy during his final two years in office, according to congressional Democrats, strategists and others familiar with Obama's thinking.” Obama's own press secretary is already pushing back on this report, saying that it isn't Obama's focus, but why wouldn't it be? The only thing standing in the way of Obama's fundamental transformation of America and implementing his progressive agenda is a Republican-led House of Representatives. Think about where America would be had the Tea Party not generated voter enthusiasm in 2010 and the House has remained under the control of the Democrats.

As I pointed out a few weeks ago, the Democrats have already explained their strategy in accomplishing this goal of a Democrat House of Representatives. Again, I will point you to a Politico headline from January 3, 2013: “Dems to run against 'chaos' in '14.” Here's the opening paragraph:

Democrats, facing a challenging fight to retake the House of Representatives in 2014, see a promising new line of attack rising out of the fiscal cliff follies: casting the Republican congressional majority as a terminally dysfunctional body that cannot perform the basic functions of government, let alone lead the country through difficult times.

We've already seen this play out in the recent battle over sequestration. Obama did his best to paint the Republicans has the obstructionists who were willing to push our country into Armageddon, until even his own administration was forced (thanks to Bob Woodward) to admit that the plan came from Obama himself.

At this point, Obama is willing to impose maximum pain upon the American people in order to score political points against the Republicans. All the while, he is doing his due diligence in painting this narrative of GOP obstruction and chaos. All of this is playing into his strategy for 2014. If Obama succeeds at executing this strategy, no matter how painful to the American people, it will mean that Democrats take over the House in 2014. After that, Obama will have two years to implement his progressive agenda, virtually unopposed.
