My goal is to write in my special, lil' “Liberal Corner” every week. I know, I know, y’all conservatives were super bummed that I did not post last week. My mom had a biopsy here in NYC (she has sarcoma, a soft tissue cancer). Will you forgive me since she is a Republican?
We are now in Day 3 of the shutdown. I am not going to regurgitate talking points, statistics, facts and opinions. Especially because every time I debate Sean, I am bombarded with tweets that I am drunk or on drugs. Considering I am not usually that drunk, my feelings tend to get hurt.
During a recent whine (not wine) session to my quasi-boyfriend - bless his heart - about your intoxication allegations, he reminded me of Winston Churchill’s comment to Bessie Braddock. She told him, “Sir, you are drunk,” and he replied, “Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.”
Voila, my defense was hatched: Being drunk is temporary but the GOP is permanently ugly. You cannot fix ugly.
May I remind you, I am not a big fan of President Obama. I am not a big fan of Obamacare either. And we need to cut spending. (I will spare you from my liberal beliefs, like my utter disgust of corporations burying dough in the sand of Barbados.)
That said, our Supreme Court of the Land upheld the law.
Earlier this year, Justice Antonin Scalia publicly shared his feelings about the 5-4 Obamacare ruling, “Have you ever heard the expression, ‘Win some lose some?’ That’s life and just be resigned to it. Yeah, I am greatly disappointed when I can’t persuade a majority of my colleagues. But that’s life, that’s the system we have, that’s why we have nine justices instead of one. I’m disappointed, but I stumble on.”
So I was disgusted to hear Senator Mike Lee say the Court basically does what it wants and disregards the Constitution. As a fellow lawyer, he should know better: never disrespect the court. (He certainly did not complain about its Citizens United decision.)
The week before his middle-of-the-night sermon, Senator Lee said at a presser, “Shutdowns are bad, shutdowns are not worth it, this law is not worth causing a shutdown over." Last week, Senator Rand Paul told Sean, “Ultimately, I don’t think it’s a good idea to shut down government either. The alleged “architect” of the debt hostage-taking, Representative Mark Meadows, told CNN, "Our intent has never been to shut down the government. It's to stop the [health care] law."
As we continue to live with the shutdown, the conservatives continue to look ugly. Matter of fact, they look heinous. And with an approval rating of 10%, they better consider a facelift really soon. Meanwhile, I will chug an Emergen-C and my hangover will be gone in a jiffy.
