The Optics of Opulence

It's no secret that I have been critical of Barack Obama and Joe Biden for what I perceive as their hypocrisy on the issue of shared sacrifice. While their policies have failed to produce an adequate recovery, millions of Americans are still struggling economically. Meanwhile, the Obama administration seems to think that their struggles can be solved if we simply tax the rich, make the rich pay their “fair share,” and force people to “share the sacrifice.” Those are the phrases they use on the never-ending campaign trail. But perhaps it would do them some good to practice what they preach.

I've pointed out the optics of the Obamas and the Bidens taking one vacation a month in the new year thus far, while children vacationing in Washington DC can't visit the White House “the People's House” because it has been closed. Why is it closed? Because of a PR stunt on the part of this administration, using it as a prop in the sequestration scare battle.

It's no secret that the White House and other administration officials greatly exaggerated, and I would dare say lied about, the true impacts of sequestration. Just yesterday we had Fox News' own Ed Henry engage in a heated exchange with propaganda minister Jay Carney over Janet Napolitano's claims that border patrol agents would be furloughed, and now we know that is no longer the case.

Obama lost a lot of credibility in the eyes of the American people because of his sequestration scaremongering. But I would argue that his tone deafness on the issue of his lavish lifestyle will continue to drag down his poll numbers.

Now, on top of all the vacations – Hawaii, golf with Tiger – the Obama's will be hosting a star-studded concert at the White House later this month!

"As part of their 'In Performance at the White House' series, the President and First Lady will invite music legends and contemporary major artists to the White House for a celebration of Memphis Soul music. The program will include performances by Alabama Shakes, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Al Green, Ben Harper, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples and Justin Timberlake, with Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader.”

So we've got the White House closed to the public, yet the Obama's decide to stage a concert filled with celebrities. I assume Secret Service will be necessary for the event, as it should be. Why can't that money be allocated to keeping the White House open to hard-working Americans and their children who are coming to Washington, only to be turned away at the gates of the White House?
