Democrats seem to be fond of political wars. Their creation of the conservative war on women is a prime example. In that case, should we question whether or not liberals are waging a war on jobs?
I told you yesterday how jobs is now the top concern for Americans. Yet we've had two examples in recent weeks where liberal policies are resulting in job losses, rather than job creation.
Let's start with the latest battle over the minimum wage.
Barack Obama signed an executive order last week, increasing the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour for federal contracts. This is yet another example of Obama over-reaching in his authority as president, and according to National Review the move may be unconstitutional. That hasn't stopped Obama before and it likely won't in this case.
But liberals seeking to increase the national minimum wage found themselves on the wrong side of the PR battle when the Congressional Budget Office revealed yesterday that this increase would eliminate 500,000 jobs by 2016. That number could rise to as many as 1 million jobs.
- This morning on MSNBC, White House economic advisor Gene Sperling argued that this was a good thing because it would allow people to “work less.” Working less may be considered a victory for liberals, but how will they explain when people do not have the option to work at all because jobs have been eliminated?
The administration also had help from the media with networks like ABC and NBC completely ignoring the CBO report in their evening newscasts.
This CBO report related to the minimum wage comes on the heels of a scathing report related to ObamaCare. If you will recall, the CBO determined that ObamaCare would cause the equivalent of 2 million fewer full-time jobs by 2021.
Yet if you ask the administration, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius claims, "There is absolutely no evidence -- and every economist will tell you this -- that there is any job loss related to the Affordable Care Act."
Not only do we have the CBO report on anticipated losses but we have months worth of reports and stories of companies laying off workers or reducing hours in order to comply with ObamaCare.
Today there is a report in the Daily Caller from the Advanced Medical Technology Association. It claims that 33,000 jobs have already been lost in the medical device industry because of ObamaCare and 132,000 more are expected.
There's another story in the Daily Caller of a Georgia hospital that is closing because of ObamaCare's payment cuts for emergency services. By the way, this is the fourth hospital in Georgia alone to close its doors because of ObamaCare mandates, changes or regulations.
What's clear is that between ObamaCare and their quest to increase the minimum wage, liberals are harming job creation at a time when jobs is the top concern for Americans.
