The House and Senate this week passed an enormous $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill. The bill is over 1,500 pages long and, needless to say, no lawmaker has read the entire piece of legislation.
While it is a step in the right direction that Washington is actually passing spending bills, this bill in particular is a step in the wrong direction. After all, it increases spending (yet again!) and does nothing to address our ever-growing national debt, which is now over $17 trillion and climbing.
Large bills such as this are generally ripe with spending on all sorts of useless or wasteful programs.
- The bill funds ObamaCare
- It spends $20 million for a trolley car in Kansas City, MO
- $16 million will be spent to build a 6-mile pedestrian mall in Fresno, CA
- It provides billions in subsidies for green energy projects
Needless to say, Washington (including Republicans) have simply kicked the can down the road. We can't even talk about shrinking the size of government because politicians in Washington can't even bring themselves to cap current spending levels.
Instead we are apparently resigned to the fate that government will only continue to grow. That is simply unacceptable because we cannot afford it. Our children and grandchildren will be the ones stuck paying for all of this; we are stealing from their futures because the burdens we are thrusting upon their generation will eventually result in less freedom and fewer opportunities.
