The Cato Institute is releasing a new study which essentially shows that in many states, welfare pays better than working.
Why earn a paycheck if you can simply get a check from other people who have worked hard to earn that money, only to have it be confiscated and redistributed by the government?
The study found that a single mother with two children in New York, collecting everything from food stamps, to WIC, to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families … these women can get benefits worth $38,000. “Someone in New York would have to earn more than $21 per hour to be better off than they would be on welfare.”
The most extreme example is in Hawaii, where the wage-equivalent value of benefits for a mother and two children is an astounding $60,590.
These benefits vary from state to state, but I don’t see how our society can function when we are paying people more and more not to work.
