Our federal government is really good at spending your tax dollars, but it is not so great at keeping track of how your tax dollars are spent.
There's a website called USASpending.gov that exists in order to provide more transparency in federal spending.
The problem is that only 2-7% of spending data is "fully consistent with agencies' records," according to a GAO report.
This means that in 2012 alone, this website was unable to account for at least $619 billion from 302 federal programs.
This includes billions – with a “B” – from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Interior, and the White House.
The website also literally has no idea where money for 22% of federally awarded contracts has gone.
So much for the most transparent administration in history.
