The percentage of Americans on welfare has hit a record high.
The last year we have data for is 2011, and it shows that over 23% of Americans collected some form of means-tested welfare.
Even more alarming is the fact that almost 40% of children under the age of five were recipients of welfare in 2011.
If you include non-means-tested government programs, the number of Americans collecting a check from the government is over 49% of the population.
What is contributing to this growth of welfare recipients? According to the Health and Human Services report, women having children out of wedlock is a major contributing “risk factor.”
Fewer people are working, our debt is skyrocketing and poverty rates are up. Americans deserve better.
