An Italian newswoman and her crew were attacked on-air by African immigrants while reporting on Europe’s ongoing refugee crisis. The attack occurred outside of Rome’s main train station, where Matrix Channel 5 journalist Francesca Parisella was suddenly assaulted by the very immigrants she was reporting on.

Parisella was midway through her broadcast on the influx of African and Middle Eastern refugees, saying Italy has become a checkpoint as immigrants try and make their way to northern Europe.

The camera is then violently thrown to the ground. Parisella can be heard screaming, “We were attacked. What do you want? You’re crazy!”

Sometime later, the reporter made contact with the studio and explained the horrifying events.

“We were stood at a distance to report on the type of welcome [Italy] can give [migrants], but they were disturbed and then assaulted us. They chased me and grabbed me by the jacket,” said Parisella.

Italian police released a statement saying that a 37-year-old immigrant from the Ivory Coast has been detained in the assault.

“This type of aggression is unacceptable and casts a haunting shadow on press freedom in our country, on security conditions in Italy’s largest station, and also on the possibility of violence towards a young woman working in the centre of our capital,” said local authorities.
