Senate Republicans announced their plan Friday to nominate a new Supreme Court Justice by this October; setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown just weeks before the 2018 midterm elections.
“If we are going to have a fully functioning court when they convene in October, that would seem to convey a sense of urgency,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn told the Washington Examiner.
Republican lawmakers and their Democratic colleagues scrambled this week to settle on a message after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his plans to retire this July; prompting liberal legislators to demand a candidate not be nominated until after the 2018 midterms.
“Tell your senators that if you do not want a Supreme Court Justice who will overturn Roe v. Wade, those Senators should not vote for a candidate from the list,” said Schumer just hours after Kennedy’s announcement.
“It’s going to be hard,” said Sen. Hatch on the October deadline. “It can be done, there is no reason why we can’t do it, just that it’s going to be hard.”

ARMAGEDDON AGAIN? Kamala Harris Predicts ‘DESTRUCTION OF CONSTITUTION’ after Kennedy Retirement
Hyper-liberal Senator Kamala Harris painted a bleak picture for the country Wednesday night, saying, “We’re looking at the destruction of the Constitution” if Trump gets his next Supreme Court Justice confirmed.
Harris was speaking with MNSBC’s Chris Matthews when she unleashed her dire prediction just hours after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his plan to retire from the Supreme Court this July.
“If Trump gets what he wants here, what’s the Court going to look like for the next 30 years?” asked Matthews.
“We’re looking at a destruction of the Constitution of the United States, as far as I can tell based on all the folks he’s been appointing thus far for lifetime appointments,” she fired back.

BREAKING: Justice ANTHONY KENNEDY to Retire, NEW VACANCY on the Supreme Court
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced Wednesday his plans to retire from the nation’s highest court; creating a new vacancy to be filled by President Trump.
Kennedy revealed his decision in a letter delivered to President Trump Wednesday afternoon, saying he was prepared to step down from the court.
“For a member of the legal profession, it is the highest of honors to serve on this Court,” he wrote. “Please permit me by this letter to express my profound gratitude for having had the privilege to seek in each case how best to know, interpret and defend the Constitution and the laws that must always conform to its mandates and promises.”
“Justice Kennedy, 81, has long been the decisive vote in many closely divided cases. His retirement gives President Trump the opportunity to fundamentally change the course of the Supreme Court,” writes the New York Times.
