The number of Americans receiving food stamps has plummeted since President Trump assumed office earlier this year, with over 1.1 million fewer people on the government welfare system under the first six months of the Trump administration.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the number of individuals enrolled under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as “food stamps,” dropped from 42.6 million people to just 41.5; a dramatic decrease and the lowest levels seen since 2010.
Economists believe the large drop of enrollment comes from illegal alien households; cutting back on their usage of food stamps over fears their involvement may reveal their identities to local law enforcement.
President Trump routinely campaigned on reducing the amount of people on the government program throughout his 2016 presidential bid, saying fraud and abuse needed to be routed from the system. The President has repeatedly called for a massive reduction in federal spending on SNAP, urging states to supplement nearly 20% of funding of the welfare program and implement strict work-requirements for adults.
“If you are on food stamps and you are able bodied, we need you to go to work,” said Trump’s budget director Mick Mulvaney. “There is a dignity to work and there’s a necessity to work to help the country succeed.”
