ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack that claimed the lives of at least 13 people in Barcelona, according to multiple reports.
“The perpetrators of Barcelona attack are IS soldiers and carried out the operation in response to appeals targeting coalition countries,” ISIS said in a statement through a news agency on Thursday.
On Thursday, unidentified assailants drove a white van through a busy pedestrian market in Las Ramblas, Barcelona. According to police, at least 13 people have been killed and at least 50 injured in the attack.
Police have confirmed that one man, identified by media reports as a Catalonian resident of North African descent named Driss Oukabir, has been detained in connection with the incident.
It’s also being reported that another suspect was killed in a shootout with police. The second suspect’s identity remains unknown.
