The North Korean regime issued a stark warning to the United States over the weekend, saying the US would face the “greatest pain and suffering” in American history should the United Nations pass new sanctions against the communist nation, reports Bloomberg.
Kim Jong Un’s regime issued the threat through the North Korean state-run news agency, saying the despot was “closely following the moves of the U.S. with vigilance” as the United States pushes for harsh UN sanctions in the wake of Kim’s sixth nuclear test.
“In case the U.S. eventually does rig up the illegal and unlawful ‘resolution’ on harsher sanctions, the DPRK shall make absolutely sure that the U.S. pays a due price,” said a government official.
“The forthcoming measures to be taken by the DPRK will cause the U.S. the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history,” the spokesperson added.
The threat comes as the United States and allies push the UN Security Council to impose strict sanctions on the regime, including a harsh crackdown on oil imports as well as North Korean products exported to China and other trading partners.
The sanctions would be a direct response to Kim Jong Un’s continued nuclear weapons tests as well as his expanding missile program. Late last month, the despot launched a medium-range ballistic missile over Japanese territory; the first time North Korea had fired a rocket over the sovereign airspace of another country.
