The shady IT staffer at the heart of Debbie Wasserman Schultz’ widening scandal was banned from the US Capitol earlier this year for attempting to hide a secret server, possibly with the intent of smuggling top-secret information out of the secure building.

Imran Awan allegedly siphoned communications and other sensitive materials from House Democrats to a secret server, raising alarm bells throughout the Capitol and resulting in his removal on February 2nd.

According to the Daily Caller, the server was closely-linked with the House Democratic Caucus and is the subject of a federal investigation; with law enforcement requesting a copy of the data and images of the device.

An official familiar with the investigation added that “huge quantities” of data was removed from the premises through a private Dropbox account, a file transferring website used to transfer large files, and that Awan may still have access to that information.

Earlier this year, Awan was arrested while attempting to flee the United States after funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to his native Pakistan. Earlier this month, his wife struck a deal with federal prosecutors that would allow her to travel back to the US from Pakistan to appear in court.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz finds herself in the middle of the scandal, keeping Awan on her payroll for months after he was banned from the Capitol.

Schultz defended her decision, saying Awan was being “racially profiled.”
