Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hurt her foot and broke a toe after falling down a flight of stairs during her trip to the United Kingdom to promote her recent memoir, reports the Telegraph.
The doomed democratic nominee reportedly cancelled a host of events after the injury, telling journalists and UK presenters that she was “sorry” for the delay but was busy receiving an x-ray for an unspecified injury sustained Sunday evening.
Speaking with the BBC’s Graham Norton, Clinton explained her last-minute absence, saying she had fallen “down the stairs” while carrying a cup of coffee; injuring her foot and fracturing at least one toe.
“I was running down the stairs in heels with a cup of coffee in hand, I was talking over my shoulder and my heel caught and I fell backwards,” said Hillary.
“I tried to get up and it really hurt. I’ve broken my toe. I’ve received excellent care from your excellent health service,” she added.
Hillary’s unscheduled absence raised eyebrows around the UK on Monday morning, with television and radio hosts scrambling to explain Clinton’s delay.
“Hillary Clinton has been delayed this morning, as I’ve already said … she’s not going to make it before the end of the programme. I’m really, really sorry about that. I think you probably understand just how sorry I am,” said host Jane Garvey.
