President Trump told reporters earlier Wednesday that he was considering sending the terrorist behind this week’s deadly rampage in New York City to Guantanamo Bay to face charges, saying, “Send him to GITMO.”
The President was speaking with reporters following a high-level cabinet meeting at the White House when he was asked to weigh-in on 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov’s pending criminal trial.
“Mr. president, do you want the assailant from New York sent to GITMO?” asked one journalist following the meeting.
“I would certainly consider that, yes. I would certainly consider that,” responded the President. “Send him to Gitmo. I would certainly consider that.”
Trump went on to critique the ‘diversity lottery visa program’ that allowed Saipov to enter the country in the first place, saying, “He came in through that program. What we are demanding is merit based immigration. We want people that are going to help our country.”
“We don’t want lotteries where the wrong people are in the lotteries. Guess what? Who are the suckers who get those people?” he asked.
