ROUND 3: GOP Senate Hopes to SINK OBAMACARE with New Tax Legislation

posted by Hannity Staff - 6.09.17

Senate Republicans plan to add a provision to their recent tax legislation that would repeal the individual mandate at the heart of Affordable Care Act, pushing the new bill as a partial “repeal and replace” of Obama’s signature healthcare policy.

According to the Los Angeles Times, GOP leaders announced their decision on Tuesday during a policy lunch, attempting to make good on their seven-year campaign promise to replace the nation’s failing healthcare system.

“We’re optimistic,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, adding that removing the provision –that requires all Americans to purchase health insurance or pay steep fines- would save taxpayers over $300 million in government subsidies that finance the plans.

“It’ll be distributed in the form of middle income tax relief,” said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the third-ranking Republican lawmaker in the United States Senate.

The GOP tax legislation and its provision that effectively ends the individual mandate is the most recent attempt by GOP legislators to “repeal and replace” Obamacare, failing multiple times earlier this year.
