Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called for a full investigation into recent accusations that liberal Senator Al Franken sexually assaulted a female news anchor while they toured the Middle East, saying the “ethics committee should review the matter.”
According to NPR, the GOP leader told reporters that “harassment and assault” are completely unacceptable, “regardless of party.”
“As with all credible allegations of sexual harassment or assault, I believe the Ethics Committee should review the matter. I hope the Democratic Leader will join me on this. Regardless of party, harassment and assault are completely unacceptable—in the workplace or anywhere else.”
Sen. Franken came under fire on Thursday after a Los Angeles news anchor said the one-time comedian forcibly kissed her and ultimately groped her while she was sleeping.
The two were part of a comedy routine, aimed at entertaining American service members throughout the region.
“I couldn’t believe it. He groped me, without my consent, while I was asleep. I felt violated all over again. Embarrassed. Belittled. Humiliated,” said Leeann Tweeden. “How dare anyone grab my breasts like this and think it’s funny?”
