Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed Mitch McConnell’s comments from earlier Thursday and openly called for a full investigation of the recent sexual assault allegations surrounding Democratic Senator Al Franken.
According to Fox News, the leading Democrat called for a Congressional probe to get to the bottom of accusations Franken inappropriately kissed and groped a woman while touring the Middle East; adding that “sexual harassment is never acceptable.”
“Sexual harassment is never acceptable and must not be tolerated,” said Schumer. “I hope and expect that the Ethics Committee will fully investigate this troubling incident as they should with any credible allegation of sexual harassment.”
Schumer’s comments come just hours after Sen. McConnell announced his intention to launch a probe of the disturbing allegations, saying “As with all credible allegations of sexual harassment or assault, I believe the Ethics Committee should review the matter.”
Franken made headlines Thursday when two women came forward, accusing the former comedian of inappropriate sexual and threatening behavior; one overseas and the other while filming a television segment with late-night funnyman Bill Maher.
Franken has since apologized for the USO incident, saying his actions were meant to be taken “as a joke.”
