Democratic Representative John Conyers was hospitalized this week for a “stress-related” illness in Detroit, following a widening sex scandal that threatens to remove the liberal legislator from his leadership position as well as his seat in office.
According to Fox News, a family spokesperson confirmed the 88-year-old lawmaker was hospitalized, but refused to elaborate on the nature of his illness or his current condition.
Sam Riddle spoke for the embattled Representative, saying he was “resting comfortably with [his spouse] Monica by his side.”
“[John Conyers] is doing okay, as well as can be expected for a gentleman that’s approaching 90 years of age. You can wait out here all you want; he won’t be coming out,” Riddle added.
Conyers made national headlines last week when at least three women came forward and accused the Congressman of sexual misconduct. One staffer even received a cash settlement –funded by US taxpayers- after she was wrongfully terminated for refusing the legislator’s advances.
The Congressman categorically denies the allegations, which now heads to a full investigation by the Congressional Ethics Committee.
