DEEP STATE TANGO: Dems Accused Brennan of Lying

posted by Jeffrey Lord - 3.25.18

In what might be called a Deep State tango, Obama CIA Director John Brennan has rushed to defend fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe in a classic illustration of how the Deep State works. The Washington Times headlined it this way:

John Brennan blasts Trump over McCabe firing, says the U.S. will send him to ‘dustbin of history’

The story quoted Brennan as follows:

“When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history. You may scapegoat Andy McCabe, but you will not destroy America…America will triumph over you.”

The paper also noted Brennan had earlier accused President Trump of being “small, petty, and banal with your tweets.”

“What is telling here is the accusation that Brennan has a penchant for lying came from Democrats – not Republicans…”

Got all that? Now, let’s take a stroll down memory lane to this story in The Guardian – in 2014. Columnist Trevor Timm headlined this in the leftist UK paper:

CIA director John Brennan lied to you and to the Senate. Fire him

Calling Brennan “a talented liar” this column came on the heels of the realization that the CIA, under Brennan’s leadership, had been spying on….the United States Senate. And in the day, Democrats were fit to be tied.

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, a senior Democrat, tweeted this:

The Guardian also headlined this about another Senate Democrat:

Feinstein accuses CIA of ‘intimidating’ Senate staff over torture report

The paper reported on Feinstein’s unhappiness with Brennan this way:

“The chairwoman of the Senate intelligence committee, Dianne Feinstein, on Tuesday accused the Central Intelligence Agency of a catalog of cover-ups, intimidation and smears aimed at investigators probing its role in a “un-American and brutal” programme of post-9/11 detention and interrogation.

In a bombshell statement on the floor of the US Senate, Feinstein, normally an administration loyalist, accused the CIA of potentially violating the US constitution and of criminal activity in its attempts to obstruct her committee’s investigations into the agency’s use of torture. She described the crisis as a ‘defining moment’ for political oversight of the US intelligence service.

Her unprecedented public assault on the CIA represented an intensification of the row between the committee and the agency over a still-secret report on the torture of terrorist suspects after 9/11.”

Feinstein was supported after her speech by Democrats Patrick Leahy (VT) and Mark Udall (CO). Udall issued a statement saying that he had “directly pushed CIA director Brennan” to tell the truth about “misrepresentations about the CIA’s brutal and ineffective detention and interrogation program.”

DEEP STATE TANGO: Dems Accused Brennan of Lying

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)

What is telling here is the accusation that Brennan has a penchant for lying came from Democrats – not Republicans. Whether it was Feinstein’s floor speech or the comments of her fellow Senate Democrats or the assessment of The Guardian’s left-leaning columnist, the accusation could not have been clearer. In the words of columnist Trimm: “The nation’s top spy is, in fact, a proficient and skilled liar.”

And now? Now there is Brennan coming to Andrew McCabe’s defense. And what is McCabe accused of? Lying. As noted here at Fox by the former assistant secretary of state for President George W. Bush:

“Reportedly, McCabe lied to the inspector general, or in the euphemistic and delicately modern parlance, he “had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor – including under oath – on multiple occasions.”

There can be no better or clearer illustration of exactly how the players of the Deep State play the game. While Democrats of this moment are ignoring it, only four years ago they themselves were up and arms over Brennan’s conduct at the CIA and quite specifically accused him of lying. Now comes the McCabe episode, with McCabe being fired for, yes, lying to the FBI. And Brennan? He jumps in to stick up for McCabe.

Right there, in miniature, the Brennan-McCabe tango gives an idea of just how arrogant these people of the Deep State can be. The Deputy Director of the FBI is fired for lying to the FBI, and the guy who defends him is an ex-CIA Director labeled a “skilled liar” himself for

what Senator Feinstein, a Democrat, said was breaking the law and violating the Constitution. And what does John Brennan say in response? It is President Trump – not even in office in 2014 – who is guilty of “venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption.”

You can’t make it up.

Eric Holder and the Deep State Liberal Wingman

posted by Jeffrey Lord - 2.07.18

April, 2013. The fifth year of the Obama Administration.

And on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner radio show – Joyner an Obama-supporting liberal – the Attorney General of the United States is discussing his plans for the future. Having served through the Obama first term, the question posed is whether Holder is planning to depart the government at the beginning of the second term. Politico headlined the story this way:

Eric Holder: ‘I’m still the president’s wingman’

The story began:

“Attorney General Eric Holder brushed off a question Thursday about when he might leave the administration. Instead, the top lawman professed his allegiance to President Barack Obama.

‘I’m still enjoying what I’m doing, there’s still work to be done. I’m still the President’s wing-man, so I’m there with my boy. So we’ll see,’ Holder said in an interview on the Tom Joyner radio show.”

Holder would, in fact, leave two years later, to be replaced by fellow liberal Loretta Lynch.

Recall now when President Trump scolded Attorney General Jeff Sessions for the latter’s recusal from the Russia collusion business. Here is Sally Yates, the Obama Deputy Attorney General who was briefly Trump’s Acting Attorney General pending Session’s confirmation. Trump would fire Yates for insubordination over the issue of the so-called “travel ban.”

When Trump’s attack on Sessions was in the news, The Huffington Post reported the following of Yates:

“Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates said that Trump’s attack on Sessions’ recusal on Russia ‘reveals yet again his violation of the essential independence of DOJ, a bedrock principle of our democracy.’”

Catch the game? There is Yates’s one-time Obama-appointed boss, Eric Holder, saying quite publicly that he is Obama’s “wingman” at the Department of Justice. Yet there wasn’t a peep at the time from Yates that Holder’s statement ‘reveals yet again his violation of the essential independence of DOJ, a bedrock principle of our democracy.’”

Then there’s this story that emerged in the wake of the release of the House Intelligence Committee “Nunes Memo.” Congressman Devin Nunes, the Committee chairman, appeared on Fox with host Brett Baier. This following this tweet from former Obama Secretary of State John Kerry. Said Kerry:

“The Nunes memo is dangerous, ugly, and an assault on the integrity of the institutions of our country,” he tweeted. “I lived through Watergate/Nixon: America pays a very steep price when a political party tries to undermine the institutions that hold us together …”

And what did Nunes have to say to Baier? This:

“We are in the middle of what I call phase two of our investigation, which involves other departments, specifically the State Department and some of the involvement that they had in this.

That investigation is ongoing and we continue work towards finding answers and asking the right questions to try to get to the bottom of what exactly the State Department was up to in terms of this Russia investigation.”

Notice the pattern?

On the one hand, Yates and Kerry are trying to tell the American people that the institutions in which they worked – the Justice and State Departments respectively – are all about the non-partisan, unbiased execution of the law. Strictly non-political.

But in fact? In fact what we have is no less than Attorney General Holder himself personally contradicting Yates and confirming that his job is, yes indeed, not to be professional and non-partisan but rather to be the President’s decidedly political (and Left-wing) “wingman” in the running of the Department of Justice. And there is the former Secretary of State talking indignantly about “when a political party tries to undermine the institutions that hold us together…” – meaning in his case the State Department – while we learn from Chairman Nunes that in fact there is a congressional investigation into just “what exactly the State Department was up to in terms of this Russia investigation.”

And before Kerry was Secretary of State? When was Hillary Clinton running the Department? Here is this jewel about the conduct of then-Under Secretary of State Patrick Kennedy, a career diplomat no less. Kennedy joined the Foreign Service in 1973 and worked his way through the ranks of career diplomats before leaving office in January 2017. The subject: Benghazi and Clinton’s role in that episode which cost the lives of four Americans. Reported the Washington Examiner’s Susan Ferrechio:

“Newly released FBI documents depict Kennedy seeking to reverse the classification of one of Clinton’s emails related to the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Kennedy promised to “archive the document in the basement of [the State Department] never to be seen again.”

Meanwhile over in yet another part of the federal government, the Environmental Protection Agency, the pattern appears yet again. Climate Depot, an environmentalist website sponsored by a group called the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), headlined this:

Career EPA employees to fight Trump: ‘We will resist in whatever way, shape or form that we can’

Trump had been in office a mere eleven days when the Washington Post was headlining:

Resistance from within: Federal workers push back against Trump

The article begins this way:

“The signs of popular dissent from President Trump’s opening volley of actions have been plain to see on the nation’s streets, at airports in the aftermath of his refugee and visa ban, and in the blizzard of outrage on social media. But there’s another level of resistance to the new president that is less visible and potentially more troublesome to the administration: a growing wave of opposition from the federal workers charged with implementing any new president’s agenda.

Less than two weeks into Trump’s administration, federal workers are in regular consultation with recently departed Obama-era political appointees about what they can do to push back against the new president’s initiatives. Some federal employees have set up social media accounts to anonymously leak word of changes that Trump appointees are trying to make.

…The signs of resistance in federal offices range from low-level grumbling and angry opposition posted online to anonymous promises of outright insubordination as new policies develop.”

One could go on. And on and on. In that same Post article former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich summed up the problem:

“Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a Trump adviser and longtime critic of the bureaucracy, said the pushback against the new administration reveals how firmly entrenched liberals are and how threatened they feel by the new regime. He cited an analysis by the Hill newspaper that showed that 95 percent of campaign donations from employees at 14 federal agencies went to Hillary Clinton last fall.

‘This is essentially the opposition in waiting,’ Gingrich said. ‘He may have to clean out the Justice Department because there are so many left-wingers there. State is even worse.’

Gingrich said Trump might push for civil service revisions to make it easier to fire federal workers. He predicted that the public would back the president over federal employees.”

What does all of this have to do with the Nunes Intelligence Committee memo?

Everything.

The hard, very blunt fact of the matter is that Eric Holder’s self-description of his role as Attorney General of the United States as the “wingman” for a Leftwing president is, in fact, the mindset of a great many of those who work and run the entire federal bureaucracy. They are in fact the “Deep State.” They see themselves as the opposition to any conservative or Republican president. And they will do whatever it takes to thwart if not covertly sabotage the duly elected president.

Which in turn makes the entire Nunes investigation into the FBI and the Justice Department totally relevant to a serious problem with the operation of the entire federal government. The now-famous texts between FBI counterintelligence expert Peter Strzok and his mistress, FBI lawyer Lisa Page said, among other things of candidate and then-President Trump, that Trump was an “idiot”, a “d*uche” and, oh yes, “God(,) Trump is a loathsome human.” There was more – oh so much more. But rest assured, they were not alone in these sentiments.

The real problem here isn’t simply the manipulation of the FBI and the Justice Department to thwart or unseat a duly elected President of the United States in the fashion of a banana republic-style insider/silent coup. And make no mistake, that is one huge problem.

No, the real problem here is that hundreds if not thousands of employees of the federal bureaucracy of the United States government see themselves – in whatever department or agency they may serve – as some version of Eric Holder’s self-description of his role as the Obama Attorney General. These federal bureaucrats see themselves as the wingman of the American Left. Their role in government is not to be unbiased or straight-shooting career professionals. Far from it. They see their role as ensuring that Leftist dogma on whatever progressive agenda item is relevant to their job is strictly followed. And as with the FBI’s Peter Strzok there is no limit to which they will not go to achieve that end. They are the Deep state personified.

All of which says there must be one serious addition to the Trump agenda. Which Newt Gingrich has summed up well. As the Post noted, “Trump might push for civil service revisions to make it easier to fire federal workers.”

The dangerous “Deep State” FBI-Department of Justice conduct and what Nunes is saying about the State Department makes it clear. American government at the federal level has a very, very serious problem. Now is the time to start fixing it. To overhaul the Deep State completely to ensure as best as can be done that this never happens again.

President Trump is exactly the president who could do it.

Sara Carter's Passion For Truth

posted by Jeffrey Lord - 2.27.18

Get Carter was the name of the film, an old crime drama starring Michael Caine as a man returned home to investigate his brother’s death in Newcastle, England. Because he is asking too many questions, very quickly it is Carter himself who becomes the target of the bad guys.

The name of the film occurs as one watches longtime journalist Sara Carter dig in relentlessly to the Trump/Russia collusion story – only to find out that the trail of collusion involves the Hillary Clinton campaign and pro-Hillary FBI higher-ups who loathed Donald Trump so much they spent their time texting and plotting how to do in his candidacy – and then his presidency.

A trip to the Carter website reveals headlines like these:

FBI informant on Uranium One Breaks Silence

New Report Exposes Strzok and Page Texts

Referral Suggests Clinton Friends Were “Feeding” British Spy Information

Nunes, HPSCI Continue Oversight While Detractors Implicated in Transparency Attack

Intelligence Committee Reveals Weakly Sourced Doc Used for FISA Application

Attorney For FBI Informant Presses DOJ For Leak Investigation

Suffice to say, these are not the kinds of stories one finds in the mainstream media. Thorough, detailed, they are journalism at its best, the 21st-century shoe-leather reporting once made famous by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as the two young Washington Post reporters uncovered the massive story their more experienced, Establishment seniors in journalism missed.

Carter comes by her quite serious reporting credentials the only way one can get them – by working endlessly at her craft

As famously portrayed in the Hollywood version of the Woodward and Bernstein book All the President’s Men, one subject of an intense investigation was Nixon Attorney General John Mitchell. Mitchell, contacted by phone, listened to Bernstein ask his question about a new scoop involving a secret fund that was run by five Nixon campaign aides and was used to investigate Democrats. (Sound familiar?) The Post would write the moment this way:

“Two weeks later, a seminal Bernstein and Woodward article appeared on Page 1 of The Post. They had dug up information that there was a secret fund at CRP that was controlled by five people, one of whom was then-Attorney General John Mitchell, and which was to be used to gather intelligence on the Democrats. Thus the story reached a new level.

“In an effort to check it out, Bernstein called Mitchell directly, reaching him at a hotel in New York, where Mitchell answered the phone himself. When Carl told him about the story, Mitchell exploded with an exclamation of ‘JEEEEEEESUS,’ so violent that Carl felt it was ‘some sort of primal scream’ and thought Mitchell might die on the telephone. After he’d read him the first two paragraphs, Mitchell interrupted, still screaming, ‘All that crap, you’re putting it in the paper? It’s all been denied. Katie Graham’s gonna get her tit caught in a big fat wringer if that’s published. Good Christ! That’s the most sickening thing I ever heard.’”

Eerily, Carter today is pursuing a story that, as with Watergate, has a presidential campaign using funds to, as the Post put it back then, “gather intelligence” on the opposition. In today’s case its the Hillary Clinton campaign paying an intermediary, Fusion GPS, to pay the ex-British spy Christopher Steele for a Trump dossier concocted by Russians. One might say the more things change, the more they stay the same. You might call it Tales from the Deep State.

In the words of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes to Fox’s Maria Bartiromo:

“The collusion is right in front of our eyes. Just because you hire a lawyer who hires a firm who hires a former British spy to make contacts with Russians – that means that you were colluding with the Russians.”

Exactly. And as with that fury from John Mitchell dumped on Carl Bernstein, today’s subjects of Carter’s investigations are not happy with her sleuthing. Except that this time the media is playing defense for the campaign in question – and making Carter their target.

Take this Get Carter-style piece over there in Mediaite.  Written by Justin Baragona, who migrated to Mediaite from the far Left PoliticsUSA, the headline reads:

Who Is Sara Carter, Hannity’s Go-To Reporter on the Real Russia Scandal?

Notice the italicizing of the word “Real”? As in, pay no attention to Carter’s reporting because its all made up. The “Real” story is supposedly Trump colluding with Russia to steal the 2016 election, a story that after a year-plus has produced no evidence whatsoever. But thus speaks a Leftist journalist reporting on Sara Carter. (But I repeat myself as so many journos are Leftists. Which is why they were enraptured by Kim Jong Un’s tyrannical sister at the Olympics – a story unto itself!)

In other words, Baragona’s real complaint is that Carter’s reporting is off script from that of the most of the rest of the mainstream media. And the fact that Hannity – say again – gasp! – Sean Hannity – is featuring her reporting on Fox only says to the liberal media that what Carter has thus far uncovered has to be discredited. Why?

REAL JOURNALISM: Sara Carter’s Passion For Truth

Sara Carter Website – SaraACarter.com

It’s one thing for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to say, as he did the other weekend on Bartiromo’s Sunday Morning Futures, that “We have a very serious problem of corruption at the very top of our judicial system and our FBI system.” But it is another thing entirely to have serious journalist Carter out there day after day after day doing the hard reporting that proves both Nunes and Gingrich to be right.

Carter comes by her quite serious reporting credentials the only way one can get them – by working endlessly at her craft. She grew up in Saudi Arabia as the daughter of a Marine and a Cuban immigrant. She speaks fluent Spanish, and as her official biography at her own website notes Carter “has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Mexico.”  Her focus has been as a national security correspondent, in which capacity she has covered the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq. She has worked for journalistic outlets ranging from the Los Angeles News Group to The Washington Times, The Washington Examiner and Sinclair Broadcasting’s Circa, where she was the senior national security correspondent. She is now a Fox News contributor. Carter has also written several exclusives, as her site notes, for USA Today, US News World Report, and Arutz Sheva in Israel. In the course of doing all this, her reporting has been recognized with both national and international journalism awards.

Doubtless, it is precisely this kind of serious journalism background that produces her on-going scoops. Which in turn are clearly starting to irritate liberal media types who, after a year-plus of insisting there was Trump-Russia collusion to win the 2016 election have repeatedly come up empty-handed. While Carter, on the other hand, is continually unearthing serious evidence of Russian collusion – with the FBI and the Clinton campaign.

The left-leaning Baragona ’s Mediaite story tries to imply that Carter’s reporting is not used by the “straight news” section of Fox, something belied by this December report on a Carter appearance on the straight news section of the Fox website “Fox News Insider.” The headline:

Sara Carter on Reports of Anti-Trump FBI Agents: Top Level of FBI Is in ‘Tatters’

For the record, this December story of Carter’s proved to be spot on. As noted here at National Review by Victor Davis Hanson:

“Director Comey was fired. Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was forcibly retired. FBI lawyer Lisa Page was reassigned and demoted. FBI general counsel James Baker resigned. Senior agent Peter Strzok was reassigned and demoted. The former FBI director’s chief of staff, James Rybicki, resigned. Mike Kortan, FBI assistant director for public affairs, took retirement. Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr was reassigned and demoted. Justice Department’s counterintelligence head, David Laufman, resigned. A cadre of others “unexpectedly” have left, allegedly (or conveniently) for private-sector jobs. Such career implosions do not happen without cause.”

Exactly. If that is not the personification of an FBI in tatters, nothing is. Carter had the story and as usual was one hundred percent accurate.

One would think that before she signed on with Fox, Carter’s continuous scoops would lead to multiple job offers from other cable and broadcast news divisions. But you would be wrong. I checked with Ms. Carter on this score and she informs that after almost two decades of serious journalism, her persistent unraveling of the scandals and misdeeds in various high bureaucratic lofts has not resulted in the usual flood of mainstream media attention. Left-leaning media is not interested in this story— and while she marvels at the outright bias she could care less.

“I have a thick skin,” she told me in a recent phone chat. And her passion is “getting to the truth” – wherever that truth may lead. “I don’t let it bother me,” she said of the criticism. And there is a simple reason. “The greatest gift of all” in her work has been that “the American people are part of the discovery” of her investigative findings. An observation made plain by her popularity at CPAC. Carter was a panelist in a discussion “#TrumpedUp: Unmasking the Deep State” – a panel moderated by National Review’s Andy McCarthy (a former federal prosecutor) and including such reporting stars as the Washington Examiner’s Byron York and Chuck Ross of the Daily Caller. She was also featured in the prime time of Hannity, where her reporting has blossomed into public view, making her newly visible as one of the most persistent and serious journalists of the day.

It is abundantly clear why Carter has developed such a considerable following. She is relentless in digging out the facts from her plethora of sources, uncovering documents and delivering repeated stories based on hard cold facts. “None of my stories have to be retracted” she notes, adding that she has made it her mission “to deliver the facts to the American people.”

She is amazed that there are journalists out there who have made it their job to skew the facts. And she is constantly shaking her head at the depth of animosity to President Trump by some journalists, an animosity that all too often seems bordering on the irrational.

“The work is significant” she adds to what she goes about every day. And so it is. The disappointing news is that as Hannity himself has said repeatedly, “journalism is dead” in far too many quarters where once upon a time just getting the facts was the job.

Fortunately, the opposite is true with Sara Carter. She is one determined journalist who is about nothing but the facts. And, as she pointed out to me, none of her stories have had to be retracted.

Sara Carter’s passion for the truth is treating her job as the journalist’s version of that famous line required of witnesses sworn to testify in court. Which would be to get the facts so that the American people will learn “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

And thank God for that.
