The United States reportedly blocked a controversial statement by the United Nations Security Council Tuesday that called for an independent investigation into the deaths of “Palestinian civilians” during “peaceful protests” over the US embassy opening.
According to Yahoo News, the initial draft of the resolution expressed “outrage and sorrow” over the deaths of “civilians exercising their right” to protest at the Israeli-Gaza border as the United States held opening ceremonies for its new embassy in the heart of Jerusalem.
“The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest,” said an early draft of the statement.
“The Security Council calls for an independent and transparent investigation into these actions to ensure accountability,” added the resolution.

The White House blamed the mounting death toll on Hamas-linked terrorists, saying the organization was intentionally “provoking this response” to gain international attention.
“The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas,” Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah said Monday. “Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response. And as the Secretary of State said, Israel has the right to defend itself.”
