Media Complicity in the Violence of Our Politics

posted by Hannity Staff - 4.27.18

By R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

Has it been noted that the country’s political disagreements are becoming increasingly violent? About fifteen years ago “the angry left” appeared on the scene, and its indignant members got a lot of attention from the media. The enormous volume of press attention signaled the media’s manifest approval if sotto voce. Next came the Occupiers’ movement, and again these ruffians came with the media’s approval, at least sotto voce. Then gun-toting cowards began shooting people for humanitarian reasons, and the media did not know what to think. The assassination attempt on Congressman Steve Scalise and his colleagues comes to mind.

The right to has its violent practitioners. There are the alt-right, the neo-Nazis, and the Klan. The violence at Charlottesville, Virginia, was a high-water mark for these creeps. The alt-right and their competitors seem to have faded a bit of late, but they are still out there. They are kept in the news oddly enough by their criminality, though the media never approves of it, even sotto voce. Yet the media never misses an opportunity to report on their malevolent behavior, often with inflated figures. As I have noted for years, without the media’s attention these creeps would be mere curiosities. Even the left-wing practitioners of violence are pretty much marginal, though they have snappier slogans.

CHAOS ON CAMPUS: University of Wisconsin to Punish Student Protesters

posted by Hannity Staff - 3.19.17

The University of Wisconsin approved a controversial policy over the weekend, outlining the campus’s restrictions regarding protesting students and saying those who “disrupt campus speeches” will be disciplined and possibly expelled.

According to the Associated Press, the university’s leadership announced the new measures on Friday, saying they would suspend and expel students who commit multiple violations of the school’s free speech policies.

The new rules state that students who “disrupt” free speech rallies or events will be suspended after their second offense, and expelled if caught protesting three times; urging faculty members and the student body to experience “all sides” of the political debate.

“Perhaps the most important thing we can do as a university is to teach students how to engage and listen to those with whom they differ,” said President Ray Cross. “If we don’t show students how to do this, who will? Without civil discourse and a willingness to listen and engage with different voices, all we are doing is reinforcing our existing values.”

The school’s decision comes after months of student protests at the University of California at Berkeley over conservative and right-wing speeches and rallies; with many protests turning violent. The demonstrations prompted calls from conservatives around the country to gain equal access to University speaking tours as their liberal counterparts.

Liberals on the campus are calling the guidelines “restrictive,” saying the new policy will “suppress free speech.”

“Who’s going to show up to a protest if they think they could be potentially expelled?” asked Democratic State Rep. Chris Taylor, whose district includes the school’s campus.

END ZONE: Miami Dolphins Ban Player Protests After Angry Fans Revolt

posted by Hannity Staff - 10.09.17

The owner and coach of the Miami Dolphins reversed course this week and demanded that players and staff stand at attention during the playing of the national anthem; just weeks after player protests severely harmed the team’s patriotic image and financial bottom-line.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Dolphins owner Steve Ross changed his mind after three of his players “took a knee” as the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ rang-out in the stadium last week, telling his head coach to inform the players that future protests would not be tolerated.

Speaking with reporters before the game, Ross said President Trump had transformed the original intent behind the protests from players’ calls for social justice to a referendum on the league’s patriotism.

“He’s changed that whole paradigm of what protest is,” said the owner. “And I think it’s incumbent upon the players today, because of how the public is looking at it, to really stand and really salute the flag.”

“Right now [with] these kids you want understanding, that we really have to get out into the white community and have them accept the fact this isn’t about all black kids and the protest they have,” he added.

The National Football League finds itself at the center of a nationwide controversy, following weeks of player protests against the national anthem and US flag. President Trump called on all Americans to boycott the league until owners and officials crackdown on athletes who “disrespect” those who fought and died defending the US.
