A Dutch lawyer was sentenced to 30 days in prison Tuesday and slapped with a $20,000 fine for lying to special counsel Robert Mueller’s never-ending Russia probe; becoming the first person to face jail-time in the DOJ’s months-long investigation into foreign meddling in the 2016 election.
According to Fox News, 33-year old Alex Van der Zwaan, the son of a prominent Russian businessman, intentionally misled Mueller’s probe about his contacts with former Trump and Paul Manafort associate Rick Gates.
“What I did was wrong. I apologize to my wife and my family,” said van der Zwaan as he awaited sentencing. “I await your judgment.”
“Van der Zwaan was charged by Mueller’s team with making false statements to investigators in an interview about his time working for a law firm hired by the Ukraine Ministry of Justice in 2012, when he helped produce a report on the trail of Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko,” writes Fox.
