Former President Barack Obama envisioned a political movement of a “million young Barack Obamas” during a recent speaking event in Japan, hoping to a create a massive movement of young people “who could take the baton” in the “relay race of human progress.”
Trump’s predecessor was addressing a weekend conference in Asia when he was asked to weigh-in on the current wave of young protesters sweeping the US; speaking out on a range of issues including school safety and immigration.
“If I could do that effectively, then — you know — I would create a hundred or a thousand or a million young Barack Obamas or Michelle Obamas,” said the former President. “Or, the next group of people who could take that baton in that relay race that is human progress.”
“A lot of our problems are caused by old men. No offense, men, who are old,” he added.
Obama’s comments came the same weekend as the “March for our Lives” anti-gun demonstrations; when thousands of students took to the streets demanding greater gun control following last month’s deadly shooting at a south Florida high school.
